These students (9 – 13) want to do some sort of after-school activity. Below there are some different
classes (A-H) offered at a community centre. Decide which activity (letters A-H) would be the most
suitable for each person (numbers 9 – 13).

9.Ian loves computers and video games. He also writes a journal every day, which he likes to read to his
friends because his stories make them laugh. One of his teachers said he should start a blog, but he
doesn’t know what that is.
10. Laura wants to study web design and page layout software. She loves the Japanese culture and Japanese
comics and dreams of being an exchange student there one day.
11. Alison is quiet and shy. She does not like fighting but she gets teased and bullied at school, and wishes
she was better at standing up for herself.
12. Beth is training to be a violinist. She practises many hours every day and is very serious about her music
studies. Her parents are worried that she is spending too much time sitting indoors and say she should
go out more often with her friends. She likes sports but has not tried any so far.
13. James wants to be a doctor. He loves music and sports, but his main priority at the moment is his
chemistry and maths exams. If he doesn’t pass the class he will never be able to get a scholarship to go
to medical school.

AFTER - SCHOOL CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES

A. Martial Arts
We will use techniques from several different martial arts disciplines to help you build your physical strength,
but more importantly your mental strength and self-confidence. Learn how to avoid conflict through
confidence in your own ability to defend yourself.
B. Drawing for Comics
Do you love making drawings to entertain your friends? If so, why not develop your talent? We will help
you nurture your own personal style and give you tips on the comics industry. Who knows, you could be the
creator of the next Micky Mouse or Calvin and Hobbs!
C. Conversational Japanese
Learn to speak Japanese from a native speaker, while also learning about the culture and customs of this
unique country. We will focus on practical language use, and use real materials like magazines and videos
as learning tools.
D. Travel Writing
Wish you were born in the time of the great explorers? Is there nothing you love more than an adventure?
Do you enjoy telling the tale afterwards? Well, there’s still a place for the travelogue in today's world. You
will read some of the great travel writing of the past, and develop your own storytelling talents using your
everyday experiences; whether it's a trip to visit relatives in the next town, or the morning walk to school.
E. Maths Drop-In Tutorial
Need extra help with your Maths lessons? We offer a friendly, free drop-in service to meet your individual
needs. Our tutors will help you get motivated and keep motivated. And if you need a break there are
refreshments and a board game corner.
F. Website Design and Construction
Are you a budding photographer who spends hours reading others’ photography blogs, or a computer geek
with a dream of entertaining an audience? Well, we will give you the skills you need to build your own
“stage” and find your audience. All you need to bring is some computer skills and a desire to put yourself
out there to be heard or seen.
G. Jazz and Improvisation
Come and take your music practice to a new level, and have fun at the same time. We will focus on the
creative aspects of music through the exploration of jazz and jamming together as a group.

H. Football Team
Join us for a fun way to keep fit, get out of the house, and meet new friends! Football is a fast-paced, exciting
sport where team work is critical. No football or even sports experience necessary; we will teach you all the
skills you need.
