      In ancient Egypt, people used to write in hieroglyphics. They used pictures, or hieroglyphs, to represent words, syllables, or sounds. The word hieroglyph comes from two Greek words: hieros (holy) and glyphe (writing). So, hieroglyph means “holy writing.” At that time, ancient Egyptians used to write on papyrus. They used to dry papyrus reeds to make paper. They also used to paint the hieroglyphs on walls or carve them onto stone.
      We didn’t use to understand hieroglyphics until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. In July 1799, French soldiers were exploring El-Rashid, Egypt, a small town also called Rosetta, when they found a strange stone. Three types of writing were on the stone: Greek, Egyptian, and hieroglyphics.
      In 1822, Frenchman Jean-François Champollion made an important breakthrough. While he was studying the stone, he realized that the writing was the same passage, repeated in each type of writing. Using his knowledge of Greek and Egyptian, he translated the hieroglyphics.
      Did the Egyptians use to speak all three languages? Whoever made the stone did. Thanks to the stone, the world had the key to three thousand years of Egyptian history! It unlocked the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
