Read the following passage about TikTok and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer for each of the following questions from 23 to 30. (E10 page 41)
How many trends can you think that come from TikTok and why has this app become so popular?
TikTok was first launched in 2016 by the Chinese technology company ByteDance. It was called Douyin and was made only for the Chinese market. In the Western world, Musical.ly was the most popular app for teenagers before these two apps were combined, creating the most widely used video-sharing app ever: officially named TikTok in 2018.
TikTok has become so popular because it is fun, user-friendly and more importantly - it knows what you like. The app lets users make short videos with music, filters and special effects and then share them publicly. It is not difficult to find a wide variety of videos there including dance challenges, handmade tutorials and educational videos. Just by simple scrolling, there is always something for everyone to enjoy. The app is also able to quickly learn what users are interested in through their watching, pausing and scrolling. It will then show similar videos to keep users engaged. Have you ever asked yourself why videos about the latest music trends always come to you first? Probably, you may have left some comments under those kinds of videos before.
TikTok’s future looks promising as it continues to grow. With its fun and easy-to-navigate content together with the advantage of user preference, the app is likely to remain a major player in the world of social media for a long time.
