As a comedian myself, I know thats not true. The secret of good comedy is to be funny! I was told that a joke the other day about a man whose dog has no nose. When asked how it smells, the man replies Terrible! The problem here is that, despite of the joke having a fairly clever punch-line, no one finds it funny. However good your timing is, you cant make out people laugh at that joke. I have my friends tell to me jokes all the time. If Ive never heard them before, and if they make me laugh out loud, I might consider using them in my comedy act. I like jokes that rely on word play (even though the joke was about the noseless dog is rubbish!). My mums from Cuba and my dads from Iceland so I guess that makes me up an ice cube. Now thats a classic joke however you tell it. Comedy is made not just to do with timing!
