Fifty years ago, the modes of communication we employ now were only the stuff of science fiction. More things than most speculative fiction authors could have imagined are possible with a smartphone: you can use it to make calls, browse the web, play games, run apps, and much more. What follows then? Older cell phones will most likely start to gradually disappear in the near future. As cellphones become more widely available and more reasonably priced, more people will use them. It takes time to happen. As is often the case with new technology, a group of fervent users make up the early adopters. The compact disc is a perfect example of how innovations from the early adopters can occasionally catch on with the general public. Other times, like with LaserDiscs, the technology that the early adopters end up with becomes obsolete before it ever becomes widely used. Smartphones seem to belong in the first category. Products like the Google Android operating system and the Apple iPhone have made smartphones more accessible to the general public. In the US, the first 4G smartphone was released by a major carrier in 2010. For Sprint, it was the HTC EVO 4G on the WiMAX network. The 4G network offers faster data transfer rates than other networks. The Internet's impact on communication will only grow. Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is already widely used in a wide range of communication products and services. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter allow users to interact with networks of people. The expansion of the Web has given people a platform from which to address the world. In the past, the only people who could speak to large crowds at once were politicians and well-known individuals. The same thing can now be done by anybody with Internet access. This could lead to changes in everything from politics to entertainment. As a communication tool, the Web may make it easier than ever for aspirational people to reach an audience. It may not be long before an unpopular candidate uses the Internet to get enough support to become the next president of the United States. Thus far, we have looked at a few fairly commonplace advancements in communication.
