Komodo dragon is a species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. They live mainly in forests, but can be seen on beaches or hilltops.
Though they are called dragons, they look like a crocodile. Being the largest living species of lizard, A male adult can grow to a maximum length of 3 metres and weigh up to approximately 90 kilograms. As a result of their size, these lizards dominate the ecosystems in which they live. Komodo dragons hunt and ambush prey including large water buffaloes, deer and pigs. They will even eat smaller Komodo dragons.
It is estimated to have 6,000 Komodo dragons in Indonesia. Humans are not a great threat to them. However, their population is slightly declining because number of males exceeds the number of females. According to the IUCN Red List, Komodo dragons are considered vulnerable. Government and 300 zoos with other parks outside Indonesia have been trying to protect them from being poached.
